India is one of the trips our travellers love most — and the one place the paperwork trips people up. The good news is that the visa is almost always simple, if you get a few things right. Here's how we keep it painless, and the small mistakes that send people home from the airport.
India is one of the most-booked destinations we send travellers to — Kashmir, the Taj at dawn, Kerala's backwaters, a temple trail or a family pilgrimage. The trip is easy to fall in love with. The visa is the one part people quietly dread, and the one part that, done wrong, can end a holiday before it begins. So let me take the fear out of it. In almost every case it is straightforward — you just have to get a handful of things right.
Two doors in: the e-Visa and the OCI card
Most Malaysian travellers go to India on an e-Visa — applied for online, before you fly, for tourism (there are business and medical versions too). You fill in a form, upload a photo and your passport page, pay, and the approval comes back by email to carry with you. No queue at an embassy.
There is a second door, though, and people sometimes knock on the wrong one. If you are of Indian origin, or married to someone who is, you may qualify for an OCI card — in effect a lifelong, visa-free welcome to India. If that is you, you may not need an e-Visa at all. Knowing which door is yours before you start saves time, money, and a fair bit of confusion. If you are not sure, that is exactly the kind of thing to ask us first.
The OCI application, in particular, is where our experience really earns its place. It is a document-heavy process — proof of Indian origin, the right supporting certificates, forms that have to be filled exactly so — and a single slip can mean months of back-and-forth or an outright rejection. We have been guiding Indian-origin families through this for a very long time, from the old PIO card days right through to today's OCI. By taking the time to set the forms and documents up correctly the first time, we have built a strong record of approvals for our clients. If an OCI card is somewhere in your family's future, it is well worth letting us prepare it properly from the start.
The six-month rule that sends people home
If you remember one thing from this whole piece, make it this. Your passport should have at least six months of validity left from the day you arrive, and a couple of blank pages. This is the single most common near-miss we catch. A passport that is "still valid" for your dates can still be too close to expiry for India's rules — and that is decided at the check-in counter, not by you. Open your passport today and look at the date. If it is anywhere near that window, renew it now, not later.
Where applications actually go wrong
The e-Visa form itself is not hard. The places it quietly fails are small and avoidable:
The photograph and passport scan — a plain, light background, the right size and format, clear and in focus. A rushed phone snap against a patterned wall is the classic rejection.
The details — your name, date of birth and passport number entered exactly as they appear on the passport. One transposed digit or a missing middle name can hold the whole thing up.
The right visa for your trip — a short single visit and a longer, multiple-entry visa are different things at different prices. We help you pick the one that fits so you are neither overpaying nor caught short.
The timing — the e-Visa is applied for ahead of travel, not on arrival, and approvals are not always instant. Leave a comfortable few days, not the night before.
It changes more than you would think
Here is the honest part. India's entry rules, fees, validity options and eligible nationalities all shift from time to time — sometimes with little notice. What was true last year may not be true for your trip, and that includes well-meaning articles like this one. This is the quiet value of letting us file it for you: we are checking the current rules against your actual travel dates and passports, not a blog post from eighteen months ago. When something changes, it is our job to already know.
Your documents, handled safely
A passport number, an identity card, a date of birth — these are not things to paste into a chat window or send over WhatsApp. When we prepare a visa for you, those details come to us only through our own secure channel, and they are not left lying around afterwards. Our concierge on the website, Tara, will even stop you if you start typing them in — she will point you to the secure form instead. Your identity deserves that care, and the law expects it.
Or simply let us do it
For a great many of our India travellers, we handle the visa from end to end — the right type, the forms, the photo spec, the timing, the follow-up — so that the only thing on your mind is the Taj at sunrise. Tell us your travel dates and send your passports through the secure form, and we will take it from there. Get the visa right quietly in the background, and the rest of India is pure pleasure.
