India Visa & OCI for Malaysians: e-Visa, Regular Visa, and Lifelong OCI

From a quick tourist e-Visa to a lifelong OCI card for those of Indian origin, here's how Malaysians get into India, and which route is right for you.

India is one of the destinations our travellers ask for most: the Golden Triangle, Kashmir, pilgrimage, and visiting family. Getting in is straightforward once you know which of three routes is yours. The tourist e-Visa, a regular sticker visa, or, if you're of Indian origin, the lifelong OCI card.

The tourist e-Visa: fastest for a holiday

For most holidays the tourist e-Visa is the easy road. You apply entirely online with a photo and a scan of your passport, and the approval lands in your inbox before you fly. It comes in short and longer validities, usually 30-day, 1-year and 5-year, the longer ones allow multiple entries, and it's valid for arrival at the major airports and seaports. Apply a couple of weeks ahead and you'll have nothing to worry about.

The regular (sticker) visa: for longer or specific stays

For a longer stay, for work or study, or for anything the e-Visa doesn't cover, you'll need a regular visa stamped into the passport, processed through the Indian visa centre. It takes longer and asks for more documents, but it's the correct route once you're past ordinary tourism.

OCI: for people of Indian origin

If you, or a parent or grandparent, are of Indian origin, or you're married to an Indian citizen or an OCI holder, the Overseas Citizen of India card is worth the effort. Think of it as a lifelong, multiple-entry pass to India. No repeated visa fees, no registering for long stays, near-resident privileges with a few exceptions. The application asks more of you and needs documents proving Indian origin, but once it's in your hand you never apply for an India visa again.

OCI is one of our specialities, in fact. It's among the things people come to us for most.

Documents & common pitfalls

Whichever route you take, your passport needs at least six months' validity and some blank pages. The two commonest e-Visa mistakes are a photo that doesn't meet the spec and a passport scan that's blurred or cut off at the edge, and both cause rejections or delays. For OCI, it's the paperwork proving Indian origin that people find fiddliest, and that's exactly the part we take off your hands.

How we help

We handle India e-Visas, regular visas and OCI applications from start to finish: the forms, the photo and document specs, the submission and the tracking, so a rejection over some formatting detail never derails a trip. Requirements and fees shift now and then, so check the current rules with us before you apply.
