Closer to China: Malaysia Airlines' New Flights to Shenzhen, Changsha and Fukuoka

Malaysia Airlines has deepened its reach into China with new daily flights to Shenzhen and Changsha, and returned to Fukuoka in Japan after nearly two decades. Here is why China matters so much to the way we travel now, a look at each new city, and how to make the most of the new routes.

Malaysia Airlines has quietly redrawn its map of Asia this year, and the story is mostly about China. New daily flights now link Kuala Lumpur with Shenzhen and Changsha, and after nearly two decades away, the airline has gone back to Fukuoka in Japan. For anyone who travels east — for business, for family, or simply for the pleasure of these cities — the map just got a great deal friendlier.

Why China is the market that matters

It is hard to overstate how important China has become to travel in this part of the world. It is one of the largest sources of visitors to Malaysia and one of the biggest destinations for Malaysians heading out — and since China and Malaysia made travel between them visa-free, the two-way traffic has only grown. For a national carrier, that makes China not a single destination but a network to be built, city by city. Malaysia Airlines has been doing exactly that: beyond the long-established links to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, it has been adding and restoring services across the mainland — Chengdu back to daily, and now two cities that put whole new regions within easy reach. This is a deliberate push deeper into China, and it is good news for travellers.

Shenzhen — China's city of the future

Shenzhen is the one everyone should know. In a single generation it has grown from a fishing town into China's capital of technology and design — the home of its tech giants, a skyline of audacious towers, and an energy that is impossible to fake. But it is not all glass and ambition: there are green parks and seaside promenades, the buzz of Shekou, and the whole of the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong included, within easy reach. Malaysia Airlines now flies Kuala Lumpur–Shenzhen daily, which makes it as simple to reach as any city in the region. Whether you are going for business or to see the future up close, it has never been easier.

Changsha — the bold heart of Hunan

Changsha is the surprise. The capital of Hunan is a city of real character — famous across China for food so boldly spiced it has a reputation all its own, for a riverfront studded with history, and for a street-food culture that locals are fiercely proud of. Drift out to Orange Isle in the Xiang River, climb Yuelu Mountain for the view, and eat your way through a city that simply does not do bland. With daily Kuala Lumpur–Changsha flights, a part of central China that was once a two-stop journey is now a single hop away.

Fukuoka — Japan's easygoing south, back after twenty years

And then there is Fukuoka, returning to the Malaysia Airlines map after nearly twenty years. The largest city on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, Fukuoka is the country at its most relaxed: open-air yatai food stalls steaming beside the river at night, bowls of its famous tonkotsu ramen, gentle parks, a castle, and a coastline you can actually feel. It is also the easiest gateway to the rest of Kyushu — the hot springs of Beppu, the volcanoes, the quiet countryside. Malaysia Airlines flies Kuala Lumpur–Fukuoka five times a week, a welcome new door into a side of Japan most visitors never reach.
