Malaysia Airlines is advising travellers to allow extra time getting to KLIA from 30 October to 1 November, with heavy traffic expected around the airport during the PETRONAS Grand Prix at Sepang. Here's how much earlier to leave, and the easy way to skip the jams.
If you're flying out of KLIA this weekend, give yourself a little extra time. Malaysia Airlines has put out an advisory for 30 October to 1 November: the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia — MotoGP — is on at Sepang, right next door to the airport, and the roads around KLIA are expected to be busy.
What's happening
The Malaysian MotoGP runs at the Sepang International Circuit, which sits just beside KLIA. With the crowds heading to and from the race over the weekend, heavy traffic and road delays are expected on the highways leading to the airport from 30 October to 1 November. The airport itself is open and running as normal — it's the journey there that needs a little planning.
How much earlier should you leave?
Malaysia Airlines is asking travellers to arrive at KLIA at least three hours before an international flight, and two hours before a domestic one. On a quiet day that might feel generous; this weekend, it's a sensible cushion. Better to have a coffee at the gate than to watch the clock in a jam on the expressway.
Beat the traffic — take the train
Here's the tip worth remembering: the KLIA Ekspres train runs straight from KL Sentral to KLIA and KLIA2 in about half an hour, completely clear of the road traffic. If you're coming from the city, it's easily the calmest way in this weekend. If you're driving, keep an eye on live updates from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and have an alternative route in mind.
